Early Goldenrod

Light Requirements
•    Full sun (6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day) is preferred.
•    Tolerates partial shade (2 to 6 hours of direct sunlight part of the day).

Soil Preference
•    Thrives in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil.
•    Highly adaptable to poor, dry, shallow-rocky soils, and soils with a high clay content.
•    Naturally handles occasionally dry conditions.

Wildlife Benefit
•    Pollinator Forage: The bright yellow summer panicles heavily attract butterflies, honey bees, and other native pollinators.
•    Specialized Native Bee Support: Uniquely supports an extensive list of specialized bees, including multiple Andrena species (A. asteris, A. braccata, A. hirticincta, A. nubecula, A. simplex), Perdita octomaculata, Melissodes fumosus, Colletes simulans, and Colletes solidaginis.
•    Larval Host: Functions as a host plant for the larvae of the Wavy-lined Emerald moth (Synchlora aerata).
•    Avian Food: The resulting fall seeds are an attractive food source for songbirds.

Human Uses
•    Landscape & Garden Design: Cultivated as an early-blooming accent in butterfly, native, drought-tolerant, and pollinator gardens, or naturalized in meadows.
•    Floral Arrangements: The plume-like flower branches serve as excellent fragrant cut flowers.

Misconception Note: Unlike ragweed, its pollen is not airborne, meaning it is not the source of seasonal hay fever symptoms despite common myths.

Resistance to Challenges
•    Mammals: Highly deer resistant.
•    Environmental Stress: Highly drought-tolerant and easily survives on harsh, rocky banks and roadsides.
•    Pests/Diseases: Very reliable with no serious insect or disease problems, though it may experience occasional leaf rust.

Note: This plant has a tendency to spread rapidly and can quickly take over small spaces
