Light Requirements
• Full sun (6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day) is required for optimum growth.
• Intolerant of shade: It does not perform well in full shade conditions.
Soil Preference
• Prefers average, dry to medium, well-drained soils.
• Highly adaptable to heavy clays, poor, dry, and infertile soils, as well as shallow-rocky textures.
• Handles moist, occasionally dry, or occasionally wet drainage conditions.
Note on Soil Quality: In moist, highly rich soils, the grass has a strong tendency to open up and flop over.
Wildlife Benefit
• Year-Round Cover: Provides excellent, continuous winter and year-round cover/habitat for birds and mammals.
• Ecosystem Food Source: Fallen seeds are a preferred food resource for songbirds and small mammals, while the foliage serves as herbage for various grasshopper species.
• Larval Host: Functions as a host plant for butterflies.
• Audubon-Approved: Formally recognized as a bird-friendly prairie asset by the Audubon Society.
Human Uses
• Landscape & Theme Design: Mass planted as a warm-season ornamental grass clump within native, butterfly, stormwater, pond margin, and rain gardens. It delivers excellent yellow-orange fall interest and lingering gray panicle shapes into winter.
• Floral Material: The long, feathery yellow-orange flower panicles serve as high-value dried floral material.
Resistance to Challenges
• Foraging Mammals: Highly resistant to deer grazing damage.
• Environmental/Chemical Pressures: Remarkably tough against drought, dry soil, soil erosion, air pollution, and black walnut toxicity.
• Pest & Disease Resilience: Reliable and low-stress with no serious insect or plant disease problems reported.
Note on Management: Can naturalize aggressively by self-seeding under optimum conditions; cutting it back to the ground in late winter is advised.
