Light Requirements
• Full sun (6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day) is the necessary requirement for this plant.
Soil Preference
• Must have well-drained soil.
• Highly adaptable to clay, loam (silt), and sand textures.
• Naturally grows over limestone and calcareous shale, adapting well to poor soils.
• Requires moist to occasionally dry drainage conditions; poorly drained clay can cause disease.
Wildlife Benefit
• Pollinator Forage: The small purple flowers offer a long bloom season that feeds butterflies, native bees, honey bees, and other pollinators from late summer until the first frost.
• Specialized Native Bee Support: Generates essential pollen and nectar for specialized aster bees, including Andrena asteris, A. asteroides, A. hirticincta, A. nubecula, A. placata, A. simplex, and Colletes simulans.
• Nesting Habitat: Native bees utilize the dead, hollow stems to nest. Leaving dead stems standing at 12 to 24 inches helps support them.
• Avian & Mammalian Food: An Audubon-recognized native choice whose seeds and herbage support songbirds, moths, and small mammals.
Human Uses
• Landscape & Walkway Borders: Due to its compact, 3-foot mounding habit, it is perfectly suited for mass plantings along walkways, fronts of borders, and meadows.
• Chrysanthemum Substitute: Serves as an excellent native, perennial alternative to traditional fall potted mums.
• Sensory Spaces: Crushed leaves and rigid stems release a distinct balsam-like fragrance, providing strong sensory interest.
• Cut Gardens: Features long-lasting blooms that work exceptionally well for fresh cut flowers.
Resistance to Challenges
• Foraging Mammals: Highly resistant to browsing damage from deer and rabbits.
• Environmental Tolerance: Exceptionally drought-tolerant and uniquely suited to withstand harsh coastal conditions.
