Lighting Requirements
• Full sun: Needs 6 or more hours of direct sunlight daily.
• Partial shade: Tolerates direct sunlight for only 2 to 6 hours a day.
• Note: Flowering will be poor if the plant is grown in the shade.
Soil Preference
• Moisture: Demands consistently moist to wet soils, thriving in frequent standing water up to 3 feet deep. It is not adaptable to dry soils.
• Texture: Highly adaptable to clay, loam, sand, shallow rocky soils, and soils with high organic matter.
• pH levels: Requires acidic soil (<6.0).
• Drainage: Succeeds in boggy areas with poor drainage.
Wildlife Benefit
• Avian support: Waterfowl and songbirds eat the seeds and hard mast fruit.
• Pollinator lifeline: Provides high-quality nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies (including swallowtails), and moths.
• Hummingbirds: The fragrant summer flowers actively attract hummingbirds.
• Mammals: Serves as a food source and vital cover/habitat for local mammals.
Human Uses
• Erosion control: Actively planted to stabilize soil on wet sites, slopes, and banks.
• Landscape design: Cultivated as an ornamental feature in rain, water, native, and pollinator gardens.
• Education: Grown in children's gardens due to its unique "pincushion" flower shape.
Resistance to Challenges
• Ground conditions: Easily tolerates heavy soil compaction and waterlogged, wet soils.
• Climate issues: Highly resilient against intense heat and features a low flammability fire risk rating.
• Animal pressure: Moderately resistant to destructive browsing by deer.
