Lighting Requirements
• Full Sun to Light Shade: It grows in full sun to light shade, but a site with full sun is best for maximum blooming.
Soil Preference
• Moisture & Drainage: It strongly requires moist to wet conditions, naturally occurring in swamps, bogs, marshes, and wet pastures. It tolerates good drainage to occasionally wet sites.
• Texture: It adapts seamlessly across clay, loam (silt), sandy, and high organic matter soil profiles.
• Acidity: Strictly requires acidic soil (<6.0 pH) to grow well.
Wildlife Benefit
• Pollinator Magnet: The terminal summer flower spikes provide nectar and pollen that actively attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.
• Larval Host: Functions as the crucial larval host plant for the New England Buck moth (Hemileuca lucina).
• Forage & Seeds: Provides fall-maturing seed follicles utilized by birds and small mammals.
Human Uses
• Landscaping & Accents: An excellent choice for low hedges along paths or walkways, mass plantings, rain gardens, butterfly gardens, and native or naturalized spaces.
• Erosion Control: Used effectively on slopes and banks to prevent erosion.
Resistance to Challenges
• Resistances: Highly resilient against erosion and issues caused by wet soils.
• Deer Deterrence: Listed as deer-resistant. While white-tailed deer may occasionally browse it, the foliage is not preferred because it is highly bitter and astringent.
• Pest & Disease Profile: Generally features low maintenance with no catastrophic issues. However, it can be susceptible to typical rose family issues like leaf spot, fire blight, powdery mildew, aphids, scale, and caterpillars
Of Note
• Spreading Habit: It is a vigorous grower that spreads via suckers to form colonies, meaning it may need monitoring to prevent unwanted expansion.
